    Myrtle Beach Live Music Picks for the Week of May 21

    There's so much going on here in Myrtle Beach music that it can be tough to sort through it all. That's why each week, we scour the live music listings locally and give our picks for an event you can attend each night of the week. Our choices not quite your taste? That's OK.     MONDAY • MAY 21

    Folkem Duo 

    • Where: Dead Dog Saloon, Murrells Inlet Marshwalk
    • When: 7 p.m.

    Having reopened to the public Thursday after a February fire that left a large portion of the venue burnt, the Dead Dog Saloon is now back in full swing and has resumed its nightly music offerings. On the revamped outdoor stage tonight will be non other than Ten Toes Up's BJ Craven and Who Shot JR?'s Jonathan Roberts performing together as the Folkem Duo.     A trio of touring bands from California will breeze through this Reggae-friendly beach locale on Tuesday evening. On a summer tour and on its way from Wilmington to the Atlanta area Makeshift Innocence will make an off day stop at Bourbon Street with Knockout and B Foundationopening up the show.     Shane Williams and Warren Bazemore, two former members of the Sony/BMG/Essential records-signed Christian Rock band Siler's Bald have been making themselves known on the local scene recently performing under the name Finnegan Bell. If you've not seen these guys, Wednesday would be a great chance to catch Folk Rock/Americana duo performance with the awesome Marsh-front backdrop Hot Fish Club provides.    (Hear their music here

    Beach, Boogie & Blues Southside Jam

    For those who think the spring rallies are all about bikes, brawls and boobs, this Thursday night jam may change your impression. The Grand Strand Blues Society Presents a night of Beach, Boogie and Blues hosted by Spider Webb and featuring many of the area's best Blues musicians jamming together at SBB. This event is scheduled to become a recurring gig at SBB running every Thursday, but tonight's opening night should draw a good crowd of Bike Week stragglers and Blues players to an Open Jam-type format.  (Full Details

    Octopus Jones & Modern Man

    It's not that often you get a night full of Indie Rock from top to bottom in Myrtle Beach, but the foursome of bands lined up for Friday night's show at The Sound Hole definitely fits the bill with varying shades of progressive, new-wavey and shoegazing rock music on display. The show will feature Greenville-based up-and-comers Modern Man, Virginia Beach's Last Remaining Pinnacle and two great local acts in M Is We and crowd favorites Octopus Jones.     Black Bike Week

    BBW 2012 goes into full effect Saturday with more events and live music than your crotch rcoket can handle. Out-of-town acts such as DreBanks Ent., Dapa Don, Street Misery Music and Da Genesis — along with plenty of others — will perform live in downtown Atlnatic Beach, but the party extends well beyond the small northside locale. There's also a Celebrity Bikefest & Car Show with live music at Myrtle Beach Speedway, the Ruff Ryders Takeover in North Myrtle Beach — featuring a performance from DMX at House of Blues — and parties and DJs all over the beach at spots like Spanish Galleon, The Afterdeck, 2001, Bikini Beach Bar & more.     Always a fan favorite, the purveyor of the party anthem "Myrtle Beach" makes one of his semi-annual trips to the town he loves with a stop at The Boathoue's Backyard Summer Concert Series. As if you needed another reason to check it the area's best backyard — full of boats, beer and bikinis — the Boathouse has a recently rebuilt stage that sits out over the Waterway, increasing the good views of the headliner and giving the backyard a full-on ampitheater feel.     TUESDAY • APRIL 17

    Singing In The Sun

    • Where: Myrtle Beach Convention Center, 2101 N. Oak St.
    When: Tuesday through Saturday at 6:30 p.m. each night
    Cost: $20.50-$27.50 nightly; three, four and five-night packages available.

    It's not often we mention Gospel music here at ListenUp, but when it's an event the size of Singing In The Sun it's a little hard to overlook. This five-day festival of some of the genre's best is celebrating its 15th anniversary with a show to remember at the Convention Center. Packing the opening night's lineup will be the Hoppers, Gold City, Jeff & Sherri Easter and the Harvesters along with guest speaker Dr. David Jeremiah. The rest of the week features no less than four musical acts each night, highlighted by a Friday performance from Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder on Friday night. (Full Details

    Ten Toes Up

    There's a pretty good chance you don't need us to tell you why you ought to go party with Ten Toes Up, one of the area's best rock bands, on Wednesday night at Bourbon Street. But in case you need another excuse: The boys just raised $20,000 through Kickstarter for a new album and will be recording in Nashville soon...so get on out while they're still working out the new material and see if you can get them to write you a song about you for the new album (they just might...for the right price.) Details.

    Also try: Boom Boom's Raw Bar takes a break from the Beach-heavy lineup to let local Blues musician Greg Bowman take a crack at it. 

    THURSDAY • APRIL 19

    Steel Pulse & SOJA

    • Where: House of Blues, Barefoot Landing, North Myrtle Beach
    • When: 8 p.m.
    • Cost: Tickets are on sale now online and are $22 in advance or $25 day of show.

    Celebrate 4/20 early with what could be the biggest Reggae show of the year in Myrtle Beach featuring international Roots Reggae legends Steel Pulse headlining at House of Blues, with support from the nationally-touring SOJA and Myrtle Beach’s own Treehouse! (Details)

    Also try: Check out the brand new duo Nick & The Animal featuring Josh "Animal" Gregory of Ten Toes Up at Hot Fish Club or head up to Club 2001 to kick off Spring SOS with national act Nantucket.

    FRIDAY • APRIL 20

    420 Fest

    • Where: Borgata Bar, 813 Surfside Dr., Surfside Beach
    • When: 3 p.m. to 2 a.m.
    • Cost: $5 Cover

    Sure there's a lot going on, but I'll be damned if this 4/20 baby — yes, it's really my birthday — is picking anything other than Borgata's full-on celebration of this special day. Jam-packed with eight great Reggae and Hip-Hop bands, giveaways from local smoke shops and more, this is a great chance to go an hang at one of the scene's under appreciated venues for live music. The lineup includes: Skitch (3 p.m), Greenville's Sun-Dried Vibes (5:30 p.m.), Wilmington's Elation (8 p.m.), local cover act Fireshot (9 p.m), Below the Bassline (10 p.m.), Hip-Hop duo Two of a Kind  (11:30 p.m.), Shamroc - N - DJ QP (midnight) and TreeHouse! (12:30 a.m.).

    Also try: Beer lovers have a pair of tasting/music events to check out including the "Very Jerry" Ale tapping party with entertainment by Brother Esau (Grateful Dead Tribute) fro 6-9 p.m at Lisberty Steakhouse at Broadway at the Beach, while Crafty Rooster will host its Spring Beerfest Friday and Saturday with 100+ beers and live music from Southern Blue & more!

    SATURDAY • APRIL 21

    Myrtle Beach Zombie Walk

    • Where: Donwtown Myrtle Beach, The Sound Hole & Victory Tavern
    • When: Noon to 2 a.m.
    • Cost: $5 cover, $10 for weekend pass

    This one's a no-brainer! Get it? Zombies will eat your brains...ahh, OK I'll shut up now. But with more than 40 bands in many genres ranging from rock to hip-hop to metal and acoustic, there's no greater bang for your buck than the 5th annual Zombie Walk and its dueling post-parties on Saturday.     It's Earth Day Sunday, so why not celebrate by participating in the 21st Annual Spring Tide Clean-Up in Murrells Inlet, where you can spend your morning doing your part for the environment and spend the afternoon chowing down on some good eats and jamming with last year's Grand Strand's Best Cover Band, legendary local act The Mullets.     Fresh Brewed Unplugged

    Always sure to bring you something you probably won't hear anywhere else, tonight's edition of Fresh Brewed Unplugged — which showcases local, regional and touring artists performing in the coffee shop's front window —  features John Wills. Wills, a Blues- and Folk-influenced songwriter from Minneapolis pays respects to legends such as Leadbelly, Howlin’ Wolf, Tom Waits, Mississippi John Hurt, Bob Dylan and Muddy Waters with his unique musical compositions and passionate lyrical styles.     The SensaMotion Band (formerly known as Simple Minded Budz) is a Roots Reggae band consisting of former CCU student Joey Collepardi and his crew of Jersey Shore players. On their first trip back to the beach since performing at the House of Blues last April, SMB will team up with local Reggae favorite Jah Harvest for groovin' show to get you over the hump this week. Simultaneously taking you back to the pyschadelic 60s with its jam-influenced style and catapulting you into the future with experimental electronica-tinged improvisational rock, FluxCapacitor is sure to get you feeling groovy.     Helping Christen Broadway’s hottest new club will be the first nationally-known act to hit the bar’s revamped stage, 90s country act Little Texas. With nearly a dozen Top 10 country hits under their belts including “Some Guys Have All The Love,” “God Blessed Texas,” and “My Love” this reunited veteran act is sure to put on a great show. House band the Josh Brannon Band will open the show.

    Tyler Hilton

    One Tree Hill fans won't want to miss heartthrob Tyler Hilton who will perform in town as part of an acoustic tour. Hilton, a singer-songwriter who has drawn comparisons from Howie Day to Elton John is known for three albums including the recently-rleased "Forget The Storm" and also for his acting roles as Chris Keller on the N.C.-filmed "One Tree Hill" and as Elvis Presley in the Johnny Cash biopic "Walk The Line."
