Featured Listens - Dec. 6, 2011
Featured Listens is a periodic column highlighting the latest in local music and other songs that are available for your listening pleasure. Whether it's the local and regional artists or just some of our favorite tunes from across the Web, this column represents the best of what's play for us this week:
NEW RELEASE
1. Nanigan "Been A Long Time Coming"
nanigan - "Been A Long Time Coming..." by nanigan
Local music fans may know Nicholas Allen more as an avid supporter of the scene than as a hip-hop artist called Nanigan, but make no mistake the Frederick, Md., native is force to be reckoned with on the microphone and a veteran music maker.
Working with fellow DMV resident and producer Tokyo Cigar, Nanigan recently released his first track in quite some time, aptly titled “Been A Long Time Coming” in November.
“This is a quick ventilation Tokyo Cigar and I whipped up towards the big four banksters and their plutocratic cronies,” he writes. “Considering the current unrest I figured it would be relevant.”
With it’s dense beats, the track wages a verbal assault on Wall Street and is a must-listen for fans of the Occupy movement or those who simply appreciate real hip-hop in the vein of Aesop Rock and his contemporaries.
Download this track and one other song via Soundcloud and be on the lookout for a full length album called “Wishing Well Water” coming mid 2012.

2. Nera Veido
We originally featured this group back in May, while keyboardist Noel Goetowski and drummer Pete Young were just getting started and looking to build a band. Though the duo never exactly got fully off the ground, they did go back and finalize the track we featured "The Phoneix" recording with local musician Jesse Goff with Young on guitar and drums.
"The Phoenix"
Recently Goetowski, now a University of South Carolina student, has formed a seperate lineup under the same moniker in Columbia which includes Eric Samson on bass and trumptet and Dave Finley on guitar.
Nera Veido has also released a collection of six songs called “Purdy Songs For Purdy People,” and Goetowski says he hopes to continue performing with his original partner while home in Myrtle Beach this summer.
“The song is about the birth, life, death, and rebirth of, what else, a phoenix,” writes Goetowski. “It is about 14.5 minutes long, so be sure you're comfortable when you listen to it.”
Check out this and the rest of the songs from "Purdy Songs for Purdy People" on Youtube.

3. The Otha Fish "Rhyme God"
Just as local hip-hopper the Ques Bois were beginning to build some buzz with an excellent “Rhythyms of the Universe” album this fall, the group decided to head in another direction and now MCs Carter “Kid Conundrum” Chestnut and William “Big Lack” Lackey carry on as The Otha Fish, which will perform its first show at For What It’s Worth on Dec. 16 (Details Here). But despite the shake-up it appears this group and its independent label, Let's Quest Collective, are headed toward even bigger things in 2012. With producer Brenden Goodcuff just releasing his own album of instrumental hip-hop — called “Pizza” (download here) — this group of artists continues to churn out tunes, including a six-song acoustic recording by singer-songwriter Candice Marotta.
Keep up with with label at LetsQuestCollective.com and download “Rhytyms of the Universe” here or download out the Otha Fish’s single here.
